Way Huge Conquistador Fuzzstortion Guitar Effects Pedal
Hola, soy el portador de la muerte!
Much like the Conquistadors the pedal takes it name from, the Conquistador Fuzzstortion has come to claim and conquer your tone with force. Way Huge describe the sound of this pedal as the same as taking “a giant Velcro strip and tear[ing] it apart with great vigor”. Now if that doesn’t paint the full picture of tonal assault you’re in for with this pedal, I don’t know what will. However, that’s not the full story. Though this pedal can certainly kick your tone in the teeth if you’d like it to, it can also be reigned in to provide a lower temperature, buzzing, complex gated fuzz tone that a lot of its contemporaries fail to harness.
En Garde!
As the name “Fuzzstortion” may suggest, this pedal is primarily designed to provide an onslaught of heavy, sharp, and articulate drive. It does this through its use of gating the fuzz. This gating holds certain frequencies in check so that they don’t bloom out uncontrollably. This flavour of controlled drive can then be slammed with more devastating weight down upon your enemies without losing the plot of what you were actually trying to play.
Although this pedal is more than capable of unleashing Hell at the drop of a hat, the gating does a fantastic job at preserving the sonic depth and nuance present within your tone. It doesn’t merely create a monster. You can still see the cute little puppy your tone used to resemble before it grew 3 extra limbs, sprouted flaming bat wings and quadrupled in size.
Simple Destruction
As with most of the Way Huge menagerie of pedals, the Conquistador is really simple to control. The control knobs are all very self explanatory yet expressive and dynamic. The pedal can be pushed to extreme points but, as mentioned before, you will never be overcome with noise. Melody and definition should still be present no matter where you set the controls.
A Surprisingly Deep Beast
The Conquistador from Way Huge is not a one trick Pony. Now, if you’d like it to, it can do the desired trick very well. However, for the brave, this pedal holds a great variety of nuanced and rewarding tones. You can travel from Queens of the Stone age style tones, to full on ‘60s sludgy scuzzy madness at will. It needs to be listened to and explored to fully understand it. Don’t judge this demonic book by it’s obviously brutal cover.
