If there was an award given out for the most overlooked genre of effects pedal, EQ pedals would definitely be in the running for the gold medal. In terms of shaping your tone and slotting into the mix live, there’s nothing more powerful.
Wampler have opted to prioritise simplicity and ease of use when designing their EQuator pedal. Typically, EQ pedals utalise a menagerie of sliders as the interface with which to shape your EQ. There is a bit of a learning curve to master the use of these sliders, not to mention the extra time and fiddliness that it takes to set them up/change them on the fly.
Wampler thought this to be over complicated and, instead, have gone for fixed treble and bass controls accompanied by two semi-parametric mid controls. This allows for powerful, diverse tone shaping just through the twisting of a few knobs proving a lifesaver when needing to make adjustments on the fly and is much easier to set up for each scenario in a jiffy.
The Sweet Spot
The mid controls have a sweepable control to select the Hz frequency that the mid control is targetting. This allows you to move the mid point in the EQ you are enhancing or toning down, allowing for really powerful and flexible shaping.
Wampler have marked each of the sweet-spots on these controls so you know where a good place to aim would be. These frequencies are the tried and true sweet-spots that all good engineers and producers are familiar with. The points in the mid-range that allow your guitar to attain that vocal, singing character or to get that gnarly mid-scoop going, all with a helpful invisible nudge and guidance from a professional producers hand.
