Pure Tone

At its core, The Emperor V2 serves as a love letter to the very-well regarded, but hard-to-find, Arion SCH-1 stereo chorus. The Arion has found its way onto many a famous board, the boards of Clapton and Landau to name a few. With that level of endorsement, it’s no wonder than JHS chose that as the tonal foundation for the Emperor’s chorus sound.

Chorus, however, is but one part of the tale this pedal sets out to tell. It is a modulation machine. Not only do you have a glorious, vintage-correct chorus tone to die for, you also have wave-selectable vibrato on tap as well. Not to mention rotary speaker simulation and true stereo output.

All of these unbelievable analogue tones can all be controlled via a tap tempo. What's more, there is a jack input on the side which allows the tap tempo function to be controlled externally. Into this input, however, you can also choose to plug an expression pedal to access realistic rotary speaker sounds or plunge into an absolute acid trip of movement and modulation.

For The Geeks

The secret ingredient in the recipe that is the Emperor V2 is its utilisation of the Bucket Brigade 3207 chipset. This is the real-deal chipset integral in sculpting the tonal landscape of the 80’s. It’s the magic touch that brings this pedal to life. To accompany this is a mini-toggle switch you can use to toggle between three waveforms (sine, square and triangle). This transforms the shape of the modulation for a smooth or more angular sound. 

Another techy feature of note is one of the improvements over the Emperor V1. Namely, the shift from the “Tone” knob of old to an “EQ” control on the V2. This has undergone a slight yet powerful change. The V1’s tone was passive yet the new EQ control is active. It functions as a tilt control, it provides a more powerful and articulate control over your sound while also completely protecting you from a drastic drop in low-end that often plagues other chorus/vibrato pedals.

Also present is internal dip switching allowing the swap between buffered and true-bypass operation. Along with this is the true-stereo functionality. Simply plug in a TRS splitter cable and you’re in stereo town.
